Kennedy Jr. Announces U.S. Caught Seafood Labeling Initiative
Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced a voluntary labeling system for American-made seafood to help domestic fishermen compete with foreign imports.
Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced on October 23 that the United States will introduce a voluntary U.S. Caught Seafood label to inform consumers about the origin of their products. Speaking at a political rally for President Donald Trump at Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, Florida, Kennedy argued that domestic fishing businesses face unfair competition from foreign "criminal enterprises" because American operations must follow stricter environmental regulations.
The initiative, proposed by the Food and Drug Administration, aims to increase the visibility of domestic products in a market where approximately 80% of seafood consumed in 2023 was imported. Kennedy stated the label allows Americans to make a choice regarding the origin of their food.
To further support the industry, the Trump administration launched Seafood.gov, a dedicated website for fishermen and consumers. Additionally, the United States Department of Agriculture is preparing $5 billion in loans to assist the fishing industry in purchasing new equipment.
