Trump Threatens Cuba Stopover After Iran Conflict

President Donald Trump suggested U.S. warships could stop off the coast of Cuba following operations in Iran, while Secretary Marco Rubio urged Cubans to partner with the CIA.

President Donald Trump announced during a rally in Fort Myers, Florida, that the United States will address relations with Cuba following the resolution of its conflict with Iran. Trump suggested that U.S. warships returning from Iran could make a stopover approximately 50 yards off the Cuban coast, stating that the ships would pass Cuba and that Secretary of State Marco Rubio would be dispatched to finish a deal with the island nation.

This rhetoric follows a period of intense pressure on Havana, including a U.S.-imposed oil blockade that has triggered fuel shortages and blackouts. The administration has previously conducted a military raid in Venezuela to seize former President Nicolas Maduro and has expressed a goal of changing Cuba's communist government. While Trump claimed oil prices are coming down, reports indicate prices reached new highs on Friday due to Middle East hostilities and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

Simultaneously, Secretary of State Marco Rubio characterized Cuba as an espionage superpower and a national security threat, arguing that the Cuban economy has already fallen. Rubio used social media to urge Cuban citizens seeking political change to establish a discrete partnership with the CIA. Despite these threats, Cuba's foreign minister previously informed the UN General Assembly that the country remains open to dialogue with Washington.
