China Warns Against Russia-North Korea Military Alliance

The Government of China is increasingly concerned by the deepening military and strategic alliance between Russia and North Korea. Beijing fears that the transfer of sensitive technologies—including AI-enabled drones, air defense systems, and naval reactors for nuclear submarines—will embolden Kim Jong Un and increase instability in the region.

Chinese leader Xi Jinping worries that this partnership reduces China's strategic leverage over Pyongyang. There is further concern that the alliance could provoke closer security cooperation between the United States, South Korea, and Japan, potentially motivating the latter two nations to pursue their own nuclear weapons.

While Russia relies on North Korea for millions of artillery rounds and over 16,000 personnel to sustain its war in Ukraine, China views the relationship as a transactional marriage of convenience. Beijing warns that the partnership risks triggering a regional conflict on its border or creating a refugee crisis.
