Global Leaders Condemn Israel's E1 Settlement Project Tenders

International leaders and UN officials condemn Israel's plan to build over 1,200 settlement units in the West Bank, warning it undermines the two-state solution.

The Government of Israel published construction tenders for the E1 settlement project in the occupied West Bank, sparking widespread international condemnation. The project, which includes tenders for 1,234 housing units intended to link the Maale Adumim settlement with East Jerusalem, is criticized for dividing the West Bank and breaking the territorial continuity of Palestinian territories.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and 15 allies, including the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Canada, labeled the plan unacceptable and urged Israel to retract it immediately. The group warned businesses that bidding for the tenders could result in legal and reputational consequences. Similarly, Ireland's Minister for Foreign Affairs characterized the project as a fundamental threat to a contiguous Palestinian state and called for a robust EU response.

UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese urged an end to the occupation itself, citing a 2024 International Court of Justice advisory opinion. She reported that Israel has killed over 1,200 people, including 300 children, since the ceasefire. These diplomatic tensions coincide with reports of violence in the West Bank, including the killing of a 17-year-old Palestinian teenager in Sa'ir by an Israeli security official and a fatal raid by the Israeli Defense Forces in Jenin.

Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich pushed the project forward, while the office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu focused on diplomatic clashes with Turkey, labeling President Recep Tayyip Erdogan an antisemitic dictator after Turkey pursued an international arrest warrant for Netanyahu on genocide charges.
