Andy Burnham Warns UK is Over-exposed to Bond Markets

Prime Minister Andy Burnham warns that high borrowing levels leave the UK vulnerable to global shocks ahead of his speech at the Labour conference.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham warned that the United Kingdom is over-exposed to global shocks due to high borrowing levels, arguing the country must be less dependent on bond markets. Speaking with The New Statesman, Burnham claimed his previous comments on the matter were misrepresented by the team of his predecessor, Sir Keir Starmer, in an attempt to undermine his authority.

These warnings coincide with UK gilt yields reaching their highest levels since 2007 and a call from International Monetary Fund head Kristalina Georgieva for leading economies to reduce debt. The Prime Minister also rejected claims from Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch that he refuses to cut welfare to fund the military, maintaining that national security should not come at the expense of social security.

Burnham is scheduled to deliver a speech this Sunday at the Labour conference in Liverpool. He intends to focus on national resilience and devolution, emphasizing the need for the country to gain more control over its economic destiny.
