Russia Intensifies Donetsk Offensive as Peace Talks Stall

The Federal Government of Russia intensified military operations in the Donetsk region on August 28, 2026, targeting the industrial cities of Kostyantynivka, Kramatorsk, and Sloviansk. Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov claimed Russian troops breached the first defensive line of the Sloviansk-Kramatorsk fortified region and are within four kilometers of Sloviansk. However, the Institute for the Study of War challenged these claims, describing them as divorced from reality.

Simultaneously, Russia launched drone and missile strikes across Ukraine, hitting a shopping center in Kharkiv and warehouses in the Kyiv region. In Kherson, officials warned residents to evacuate as the power grid was targeted ahead of winter. Ukraine responded with long-range drone strikes inside Russia, including an attack on the Slavneft-YANOS refinery in Yaroslavl that killed one person and wounded 27. Russia further threatened British military installations after the United Kingdom agreed to provide classified technology for Ukraine to produce Storm Shadow cruise missiles.

Diplomatically, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov announced that peace negotiations are on a deep pause, dismissing recent efforts by CIA Director John Ratcliffe and a Vatican envoy to push for a settlement. President Vladimir Putin continues to demand full control of the Donetsk region as a prerequisite for a ceasefire. In response to the escalation, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha welcomed a proposal from Spain, Sweden, Poland, and the Netherlands to unlock over 200 billion euros in frozen Russian central bank assets to fund Ukraine's defense.
