Democrats Seize Control of House and Senate in Blue Wave
Democrats won control of both houses of Congress and the Texas governorship in the November 3 elections, leaving President Donald Trump as a lame duck.
Democrats won a decisive victory in the November 3 elections, seizing control of both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. The shift in power leaves Donald Trump as a lame duck president facing likely Democratic investigations into his administration's practices, following historic lows in approval ratings driven by inflation and a war against Iran.
The election featured historic gains in Texas, where Gina Hinojosa defeated incumbent Governor Greg Abbott and James Talarico became the first Democratic U.S. senator from the state in over three decades. In Michigan, Abdul El-Sayed won a U.S. Senate seat. President Trump acknowledged the results, stating he was "absolutely willing" to accept them and work with the new Democratic majority.
Local and state results also saw significant shifts. In Los Angeles, Nithya Raman defeated incumbent Mayor Karen Bass, and voters approved a ban on oil and gas drilling. Across the United States, voters approved more than $31 billion in transit funding, while California voters passed several housing and education measures but rejected a billionaire wealth tax.
