The Donald Trump administration is executing a military campaign against Iran as part of a "Strategy of Denial" designed to curb the global rise of China. Developed by Under Secretary of War for Policy Elbridge Colby, the strategy seeks to obtain proxy control over Iranian oil and gas reserves to weaponize them as leverage, depriving China of cheap energy to force a trade deal that maintains U.S.-led unipolarity.
By April 2026, the conflict entered its sixth week, coinciding with the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has indicated the waterway will only reopen if oil is priced in renminbi. In response, Trump threatened to attack Iranian bridges and power plants and floated the possibility of seizing Kharg Island, a critical oil hub. He characterized the reserves as "there for the taking" and suggested that controlling these flows would bolster his bargaining power ahead of a scheduled May summit with President Xi Jinping in Beijing.
While White House officials have stated there are no formal plans to seize assets, Trump has repeatedly linked the conflict to U.S. energy dominance and the preservation of the petrodollar system. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China has condemned these actions, asserting that Iran's sovereignty over its natural resources must be safeguarded. Critics warn that this resource strangulation could precipitate a larger war, drawing parallels to the U.S. oil embargo on Japan prior to World War II.
