UK Diesel Prices Hit Record 200p Per Litre

Diesel prices in the United Kingdom reached a record average of 200.01p per litre on October 3 amid global supply disruptions and looming fuel duty hikes.

Diesel prices in the United Kingdom reached a record average of 200.01p per litre on October 3, driven by global supply disruptions linked to conflicts involving Russia, Ukraine, the United States, Israel, and Iran. In response to the shortage, Donald Trump indicated he is considering a ban on American diesel exports, while US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent pressured European allies to release emergency oil reserves immediately.

Transport Minister Keir Mather defended the resilience of the national supply, stating that the UK has a diverse range of sources. To coordinate supply chain resilience, the UK participated in crisis discussions in Brussels with the European Commission and EU member states.

Economic pressure is expected to mount in early 2027 as a long-standing fuel duty freeze and a 5p cut from 2022 expire. The indirect excise tax is projected to rise from 52.95p to 57.95p per litre by March. Prime Minister Andy Burnham and Chancellor John Healey have both indicated they are considering measures to ease the cost of driving, though Burnham noted that limited public finances restrict the government's options. A final decision on whether to extend the 5p cut or halt the duty hike will be announced during the Autumn Budget on October 28.
