Trump Reinstates Iran Blockade as Military Strikes Intensify

Donald Trump reimposed a naval blockade of Iranian ports and launched a week of airstrikes after a ceasefire collapsed over control of the Strait of Hormuz.

Following the collapse of a June 17 memorandum of understanding, Donald Trump declared a ceasefire over and ordered the United States military to resume a naval blockade of all Iranian ports and coastal areas. The escalation began after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) attacked commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, including the M/V GFS Galaxy and two UAE tankers, the Mombasa and Al Bahiyah. In response, the U.S. Central Command executed seven consecutive nights of precision strikes targeting Iranian air defenses, missile sites, and coastal surveillance infrastructure, including the Bandar Abbas Naval Base and the Chabahar port.

Trump initially proposed a 20% reimbursement fee for non-Iranian cargo transiting the strait to cover security costs, designating the U.S. as the "Guardian of the Hormuz Strait." However, he later replaced this toll with proposed trade and investment deals from Gulf nations. Iran retaliated with missile and drone attacks against U.S. military facilities in Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, Qatar, and Syria, as well as attacks on Iraqi Kurdish dissidents.

Iranian officials report at least 38 civilian deaths and hundreds of injuries, while the U.S. military confirmed 14 service members killed and 427 wounded since the war began in February. Tensions have plummeted maritime traffic to near-record lows, driving Brent crude oil prices toward $87 per barrel. Iran has threatened to utilize Houthi allies to close the Bab el-Mandeb Strait if the U.S. targets power plants and bridges, while Trump maintains that the U.S. is "winning big in Iran."
