Former FBI Employees Sue Kash Patel Over Political Firings

Nine former FBI employees sued Director Kash Patel and the Justice Department, alleging they were fired in political retribution for investigating Donald Trump.

Nine former FBI agents, intelligence analysts, and staff operations specialists filed a federal lawsuit in Washington on Thursday seeking reinstatement and back pay. The plaintiffs allege they were unlawfully terminated in February 2026 as part of a "personal vendetta" by President Donald Trump due to their roles in the Plasmic Echo investigation into the president's retention of classified documents at Mar-a-Lago.

Kash Patel, the FBI Director, is a primary defendant in the suit. The plaintiffs claim Patel provided false testimony to the House Intelligence Committee by asserting the firings resulted from internal investigations into unethical conduct. The lawsuit further suggests the dismissals were motivated by scrutiny Patel faced following his behavior at the Olympics in Milan. In congressional testimony, Patel defended the actions by claiming the employees "weaponized" the bureau.

The plaintiffs, who cite over a century of combined service including work on the Boston Marathon bombing, argue they were terminated without legally required notice or disciplinary processes. They describe the firings as part of a broader campaign of retribution that began after the 2025 inauguration. Attorney General Todd Blanche and the Trump administration have responded by arguing the president possesses inherent authority to fire any executive branch employee without providing a reason or conducting a formal review.
