Israel Strikes Syrian Airbase to Block Turkish Military Buildup

Israel launched airstrikes on Syria's Abu al-Duhur airbase to prevent Turkish troop deployments, sparking international condemnation and U.S. efforts to establish a deconfliction mechanism.

Israeli aircraft launched eight airstrikes on the Abu al-Duhur military airbase in Idlib, Syria, on August 18, 2026, targeting runways and storage facilities. Benjamin Netanyahu and the Israeli government justified the operation as a necessary deterrent to prevent Turkish troops from deploying at the base near Aleppo, which they characterized as a breach of a security status quo and a threat to national security. Israel further alleged that Turkey intended to install advanced radar and missile systems that would restrict Israeli air freedom.

Turkiye and the Syrian government, led by President Ahmed al-Sharaa, condemned the strikes as flagrant violations of sovereignty. Turkiye dismissed Israel's claims as frivolous and untenable, denying that any military delegation was present at the base during the attack. Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani clarified that while Turkish officers had visited for training and expertise exchange, there were no plans for a permanent military presence.

The United States described the strikes as an unnecessary escalation. Special Envoy Tom Barrack warned that the lack of communication nearly led to a direct military confrontation, as Turkish forces were unaware of the mission. In response, the U.S. is working to establish a formal deconfliction mechanism between Israel, Turkiye, and Syria to prevent future kinetic interactions. The incident has exacerbated regional tensions, drawing condemnation from the United Nations, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and the League of Arab States, while Israeli opposition figures accused Netanyahu of using the strikes for domestic political gain.
