Oil Prices Volatile as Iran Attacks Ship Amid Peace Talks

Global oil prices fluctuated after Iran attacked a cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz during a fragile 60-day ceasefire with the United States.

Global oil prices experienced significant volatility in late June 2026 following a fragile peace agreement between the United States and Iran. The two nations signed a 60-day memorandum of understanding in mid-June to suspend hostilities and reopen the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for the U.S. lifting oil sanctions and easing port restrictions. This agreement initially lowered prices to nearly $70 per barrel, the lowest since the conflict began on February 28, leading to predicted fuel price drops in regions like Ontario and Maine.

Stability was disrupted on Thursday, June 25, when a projectile struck the Singapore-flagged container ship Ever Lovely near the coast of Oman. U.S. officials attributed the attack to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. While no casualties occurred, the incident caused WTI Crude to surge over 2% and prompted the United Nations shipping agency to suspend its voluntary evacuation scheme. In response, the Persian Gulf Strait Authority warned that security for vessels traveling outside designated channels is no longer guaranteed.

President Donald Trump characterized the ongoing negotiations in Switzerland as tenuous, stating that the U.S. Senate's rejection of a resolution to curb his war powers puts Iran on notice. Meanwhile, Secretary of State Marco Rubio reaffirmed U.S. and Gulf Cooperation Council support for unrestricted navigation, warning that disruptions violate the peace agreement. Despite the attack, prices began to trend downward again by June 26 as tanker shipments resumed, though deep structural inventory shortages persist.
