Donald Trump Condemns UK-Mauritius Chagos Islands Sovereignty Deal

President Donald Trump condemned a proposed agreement between the United Kingdom and Mauritius regarding the sovereignty of the Chagos Islands, describing the deal as "terrible" and "ridiculous."

The agreement would see the United Kingdom surrender sovereignty of the strategically vital archipelago to Mauritius in exchange for payment and a leasehold arrangement. Critics of the deal argue that the transfer undermines Western security and suggest the United States should instead insist that the United Kingdom transfer administration of the islands directly to the U.S.

In response to the American president's criticism, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated he would review the issue. The dispute is further complicated by an advisory opinion issued by the International Court of Justice concerning the archipelago.
