Justice Department Conspiracy Probe Faces Leadership Turmoil

The Justice Department inquiry into a conspiracy to undermine Donald Trump faces internal dysfunction following the resignations of lead investigators Joseph diGenova and Kurt Olsen.

A Justice Department investigation into a purported grand conspiracy to undermine Donald Trump has descended into turmoil, characterized by leadership departures and internal dysfunction. The inquiry, which seeks to prove that various probes into the president were part of a nefarious scheme, has struggled to meet evidentiary standards.

Internal instability peaked in September 2026 when lead investigator Joseph diGenova resigned following a heated dispute with Attorney General Todd Blanche. Shortly thereafter, deputy Kurt Olsen also resigned after allegedly failing a polygraph test concerning foreign contacts. These departures have shifted leadership of the probe back to Washington under Deputy Attorney General Aakash Singh.

The investigation has significantly disrupted the U.S. attorney’s office for the Southern District of Florida. The office has seen its staff shrink by nearly half as operations pivoted toward political targets. Despite the leadership vacuum, prosecutors continue to pursue narrower cases against former F.B.I. Director James Comey and former C.I.A. Director John Brennan.
