US Revokes Visa of Former Iraqi Finance Minister Taif Sami Mohammed

The United States Department of State revoked the visa of Taif Sami Mohammed, the former finance minister of Iraq, after she was placed on the Federal Bureau of Investigation's terrorist watchlist. Assistant Secretary of State Dylan Johnson confirmed that Mohammed is no longer in the United States, though the department did not specify if her departure was voluntary.

The action follows allegations from Republican lawmakers, including Representatives Joe Wilson and Greg Steube, who described Mohammed as a key enabler of terrorist funding in Iraq. The State Department framed the move as part of the security and immigration policies of President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, asserting that suspected terrorists will not be permitted to remain in the country.

This decision marks a sharp reversal from 2022, when the Joe Biden administration honored Mohammed with the International Women of Courage Award. At that time, then-Secretary of State Antony Blinken praised her as the Iron Woman for her efforts to fight corruption and advocate for gender equity.

Separately, an Iraqi court placed Mohammed on a judicial wanted list in August 2025 as part of a corruption investigation into public funds and government contracts. Mohammed is believed to be outside Iraq and has not been detained. The U.S. government has not specified if the terror watchlist designation is linked to the congressional allegations or the Iraqi judicial probe.
