Trump Administration Funds Initiatives to Counter Chinese Influence

The Donald Trump administration is increasing funding by hundreds of millions of dollars to counter the global influence of China. As part of this strategic push, the administration notified Congress of its intent to spend $175.8 million to replace aging undersea telecommunications cables across Central America and the Caribbean.

U.S. officials, including the United States Department of State, identified national security and prosperity risks linked to Chinese economic activities in the Western Hemisphere. Specific concerns include Chinese ownership of ports at the Panama Canal and various infrastructure projects funded through the Belt and Road initiative. This increase in spending follows previous budget and personnel cuts to similar programs.

These actions occur while President Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping maintain a public appearance of cooperation ahead of Xi's planned visit to the United States this fall.
