UK Deploys RAF Tanker to Support Saudi Arabia Against Houthis

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has authorized the Royal Air Force to provide limited, defensive military support to Saudi Arabia to counter attacks by Iran-backed Houthi rebels. The agreement involves deploying one A400M Voyager refueling tanker, based at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus, to extend the flight duration of Saudi Typhoon jets intercepting drones and missiles. The mission is expected to last several weeks and will remain under review.

The decision follows a surge in Houthi activity, including ballistic missile strikes on Riyadh and the seizure of the strategic port city of Mokha and Perim Island in Yemen. These actions have allowed the Houthis to declare a blockade on Saudi shipping in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab strait. Burnham stated the intervention is necessary to secure British interests and maintain open oil pathways to ease global inflationary pressures.

While Saudi Arabia requested direct military assistance from several allies, the United States has declined direct involvement. President Donald Trump rejected requests for American airstrikes, opting instead to provide intelligence and targeting data to Riyadh. Simultaneously, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced a total shutdown of Iranian airlines effective September 23, threatening to remove any entity assisting them from the dollar system to further isolate Iran.
