Trump Administration Cuts Funding for Global and Domestic Contraception

President Donald Trump is eliminating federal funding for family planning and contraception both in the United States and across 41 countries.

Donald Trump is implementing a systemic reduction of federal support for contraception and family planning through domestic policy shifts and the cessation of international aid. The administration has stopped spending Congressional appropriations for global family planning, resulting in the closure of rural clinics and the termination of community health workers in 41 countries, with the most significant disruptions occurring in Nigeria, Ethiopia, Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Uganda.

Domestically, the Department of Health and Human Services released guidance that prioritizes childbirth and natural family planning over traditional contraception and is moving to end funding for Planned Parenthood. Internationally, the administration dismantled the Office of Population and Reproductive Health within the United States Agency for International Development.

These actions are driven by a coalition of social conservatives, pronatalists, and anti-immigration conservatives seeking to increase birth rates. The State Department defended these cuts in its fiscal year 2027 budget request, arguing that foreign assistance should align with American values and that the budget eliminates activities that do not increase national security.
