UN Chief Demands Middle East Ceasefire Amid Global Crises

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres demanded an immediate end to fighting across the Middle East during a July 31, 2026, press conference in New York. Guterres warned that regional conflict is driving global instability and disrupting trade through the Strait of Hormuz and Bab al-Mandab. He specifically called for the restoration of international navigational rights to protect 45 million people facing acute food insecurity.

Guterres characterized an agreement between Hamas and U.S. President Donald Trump's Board of Peace as "good news." The proposed roadmap involves Hamas's disarmament and a full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza. However, UN agencies continue to report rising casualties from Israeli airstrikes in Gaza and Lebanon, as well as ongoing U.S.-Iran strikes that have impacted thousands of children.

Earlier UN updates highlighted a wider scope of global volatility. The Secretary-General condemned Russian missile and drone attacks on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities that killed at least a dozen civilians. In Iran, the Ministry of Health reported at least 60 deaths since hostilities escalated a month prior, with recent strikes hitting Fars, Hormozgan, Bushehr, and Khuzestan provinces. In Lebanon, UNIFIL recorded 80 Israeli airspace violations in three days and observed artillery firing into residential structures. To address the resulting humanitarian crises, the UN allocated $10 million to combat food insecurity in Yemen.
