Donald Trump Demands Federal Reserve Cut Interest Rates to 1%

President Donald Trump is demanding the Federal Reserve slash interest rates to 1% to lower borrowing costs ahead of the November midterm elections.

President Donald Trump is publicly demanding that the Federal Reserve lower interest rates to 1%, a significant drop from the current range of 3.75% to 4%. Trump argues that the United States deserves ultra-low borrowing costs as the world's largest economy, a position he is pushing as he faces low approval ratings regarding rising prices for staples and the general cost of living before the November midterm elections.

Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh has resisted these demands, recently leading a unanimous vote to hike rates to combat inflation, which stood at 3.7% in July. While Trump has criticized the rate hike, he has not directed the same level of personal attacks toward Warsh as he did toward former Chair Jerome Powell.

Beyond interest rate policy, Trump is seeking to oust Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook. He is also awaiting the results of an inspector general's probe into Powell's previous oversight of a construction project. Analysts warn that slashing rates to 1% would be cataclysmic, potentially causing the US dollar to plummet and increasing the cost of government borrowing.
