Trump Qualifies Support as Russia Violates NATO Airspace

Russia escalated pressure on NATO's eastern flank in September 2025 through a series of airspace violations. These actions included drone incursions into Poland on September 10 and Romania shortly after, fighter jet breaches in Estonia on September 19, and drone activity that forced temporary airport closures in Copenhagen and Oslo. The incursions in Poland triggered Article 4 of the NATO treaty, prompting the alliance to launch Operation Eastern Sentry.

Donald Trump initially stated he would back Poland and the Baltic states in shooting down Russian aircraft violating their airspace. However, by Tuesday, he reversed this position, stating that such support "depends on the circumstance." This shift occurs as the Trump administration reduces the U.S. security footprint in Europe by scaling down arms sales to replenish domestic arsenals and threatening cuts to the Baltic security initiative. Trump has also conditioned further sanctions on Russia on the prior actions of NATO and G7 countries.

In response to the breaches, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk threatened to shoot down objects violating Polish territory. Reports indicate Poland has already shot down multiple Russian drones. These provocations coincide with a stall in Russia's summer offensive in Ukraine, characterized by high casualties and minimal territorial gains.
