Donald Trump Campaigns Across South Ahead of Midterms
President Donald Trump visited Mississippi, Texas, and South Carolina to support Republican candidates facing competitive Democratic challenges in the upcoming midterm elections.
President Donald Trump conducted a series of campaign trips across the American South to support Republican candidates facing competitive midterm races. On October 27, Trump held a rally in Corinth, Mississippi, to support incumbent Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith. The visit occurred as Democratic challenger Scott Colom, a district attorney supported by Kamala Harris and Pete Buttigieg, campaigns to unseat Hyde-Smith.
While Colom trails Hyde-Smith by an average of six points in polling, he characterized the president's visit to the Republican stronghold as evidence of Democratic momentum and Republican desperation. In response, Republican campaign efforts have used television advertisements to portray Colom as too liberal, specifically labeling him a "transgender defender."
Beyond Mississippi, Trump visited Texas to oppose Democratic challenger James Talarico in a race projected to be the most expensive Senate contest in history, where Talarico holds a narrow lead. The president also scheduled a visit to South Carolina to assist Senator Darline Graham. These efforts coincide with broader Democratic gains in the region, including a closely contested governor's race in Georgia between Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms and Republican Rick Jackson.
