Trump Cancels Iran Strike to Pursue Peace Deal

President Donald Trump canceled a planned large-scale military strike against Iran to allow for the finalization of a peace deal framework. Trump characterized the talks as Tehran's "last chance" and threatened the "decapitation" of Iranian leadership, accusing officials of being "unbelievably duplicitous" for denying that negotiations are taking place. The Iranian government has consistently denied direct talks with the U.S., stating it only works with Oman to manage vessel traffic. Meanwhile, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian dismissed rumors of his resignation and denied a rift with Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, vowing to "stand firm."

Regional instability continues to impact global markets. Crude oil prices plummeted by over 5% following the strike cancellation but recovered as reports emerged of three Iranian tanker attacks and a projectile strike on a cargo vessel in the Strait of Hormuz. In other developments, Iranian adviser Mohsen Rezaei announced that Iran suspended planned strikes in Ukraine after Kyiv claimed a previous attack on an Iranian vessel in the Caspian Sea was a mistake.
