Israel Builds 23km Barrier Dividing Gaza Strip

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are constructing a massive earthen barrier and security zone exceeding 23 kilometers in length to separate the more than 50 percent of the Gaza Strip under Israeli control from the rest of the enclave. Satellite imagery indicates the barrier follows and, in some areas, extends beyond the "yellow line," a temporary boundary established in an October 2025 U.S.-brokered ceasefire. In Rafah, the barrier reaches approximately 1,300 meters past the line, while in Khan Younis, it extends 400 meters beyond the agreement.

This construction coincides with intensified military activity. Between July 13 and July 20, 2026, Israeli strikes killed at least 57 Palestinians, including women and children. The Palestinian Ministry of Health reports more than 1,100 deaths since October 2025. Israeli forces have leveled infrastructure and established new military bases, including one in Bani Suheila, on the ruins of Palestinian towns.

While the IDF maintains the barrier is designed to "prevent infiltration and protect Israeli troops and Israeli communities near Gaza," the project has fueled fears of permanent annexation. Defense Minister Israel Katz recently announced plans to establish three Nahal outposts in northern Gaza. Meanwhile, ceasefire implementation remains stalled due to disputes over Hamas' failure to disarm and accusations of truce violations. The Board of Peace, led by U.S. President Donald Trump, and the United States Central Command have declined to comment on the barrier's construction.
