Nicușor Dan Visits Paris and Kyiv Amid Government Deadlock
President Nicușor Dan reaffirmed support for Ukraine in France and Kyiv while managing a domestic political crisis over Romania's government composition.
President Nicușor Dan conducted a series of diplomatic visits to France and Ukraine between July 13 and 15, 2026, focused on regional security and the defense of Ukraine. In Paris, Dan attended the Coalition of the Willing for Ukraine meeting hosted by President Emmanuel Macron and participated in French National Day ceremonies, where 22 soldiers from the Mihai Viteazul 30th Guards Brigade marched in the parade. During these events, Dan argued that investing in Ukraine's security is an investment in Romania's own safety and identified the protection of Black Sea commercial shipping routes as an immediate priority. Interim Defense Minister Radu Miruță also announced a joint drone production project with Ukraine, aiming for completion by 2030.
Following the Paris visit, Dan traveled to Kyiv on July 15 for the fifth Ukraine-Southeast Europe Summit at the invitation of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to discuss European integration for Ukraine and Moldova.
Simultaneously, Dan is mediating a political crisis in Romania following the May dismissal of Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan's government. He is attempting to form a new cabinet by July 20, proposing a "truce government" of technocrats. However, a deadlock persists as the National Liberal Party and Save Romania Union refuse to govern with the Social Democratic Party. While Dan has ruled out the far-right Alliance for the Union of Romanians due to their non-pro-Western stance, he noted that snap elections remain an unlikely but possible option if the stalemate continues.
