Iran Warns U.S. After Alleged Ceasefire Breaches in Persian Gulf
Iran warns of reactions to U.S. ceasefire violations while maintaining a technical agreement to halt mutual attacks and resume negotiations.
The Government of Iran warned the United States of a response to recent ceasefire breaches in the Persian Gulf, which Tehran characterizes as violations of a 14-point Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Parliament Speaker and chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf noted that while the MoU successfully ended a naval blockade around June 15, further progress toward a final deal depends on the continued implementation of agreement clauses.
In Washington on June 30, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul discussed the MoU, emphasizing the need for maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz and a shared commitment to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons. The German Foreign Office welcomed the agreement as a critical window for diplomacy to stabilize a fragile situation.
Despite the diplomatic movement, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei denied reports of imminent bilateral political talks with U.S. officials. He clarified that an expert delegation visiting Doha, Qatar, this week is attending technical discussions regarding the release of frozen Iranian assets rather than engaging in political negotiations with Washington.
