Trump Negotiates Russian Diesel Deal Amid Sanctions Backlash

President Donald Trump reached a deal with Russia to supply 300,000 metric tons of diesel to ease global shortages, sparking bipartisan condemnation in the U.S.

Donald Trump negotiated a deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin to supply 300,000 metric tons of diesel to the global market to combat record-high fuel prices. The move comes as global diesel supplies face severe constraints expected to last into 2027, driven by conflicts in the Middle East and Ukrainian attacks on Russian refineries. In the United States, retail diesel prices recently hit $6 a gallon.

The agreement has triggered intense political backlash. A bipartisan group of twelve U.S. senators demanded the president rescind the deal, arguing it provides funds for Russia to finance its war in Ukraine and strengthen ties with China, Iran, and North Korea. Representative Lloyd Doggett claimed the deal violates a 2022 law banning Russian energy imports. Trump defended the action, stating the supply would help farmers and ranchers.

European leaders also criticized the move, with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni warning that the deal contradicts diplomatic efforts to bring Russia to negotiations with Ukraine. The controversy coincides with an October 18 deadline for the administration to implement the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026, which mandates new sanctions and tariffs on Russian energy unless waived for national interest.

Market volatility persists as Houthi attacks in Riyadh target infrastructure, further threatening recovery efforts. While G7 economies have pledged to accelerate oil supply releases, analysts note that impaired refinery capacity in Russia may limit the actual impact of easing export restrictions.
