Netanyahu Calls for Israel's Independence from U.S. Military Aid

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urged Israel to develop a domestic armaments network to end its reliance on United States military aid amid tensions over a U.S.-Iran peace deal.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called for Israel to achieve weapons independence and establish a domestic armaments network to reduce its reliance on foreign military aid. Speaking to combat reserve officers in the Gush Etzion settlement bloc in the West Bank on June 18, Netanyahu argued that Israel must manufacture its own munitions and integrate new technology to ensure operational freedom and long-term security against Iran and its proxies.

These remarks follow the signing of the Islamabad Understanding on June 18, a 14-point memorandum between the United States and Iran intended to end their war. Israel has fiercely opposed the agreement, and Netanyahu maintained that Israel will continue to confront Iran despite U.S. peace efforts. This policy shift coincides with strained relations between Netanyahu and U.S. President Donald Trump, who has been publicly critical of the Prime Minister as conflicts with Hezbollah threaten diplomatic progress.

Netanyahu expressed a goal to phase out U.S. military assistance over the next decade, aiming for support to eventually reach zero. In response, Vice President JD Vance criticized the Israeli cabinet for opposing the U.S. administration, noting that the United States provides and finances two-thirds of the defensive weapons protecting Israel. Currently, Israel receives approximately $3.8 billion annually under a 2016 agreement that runs through 2028.
