Iran Demands Sanctions Relief Amid Energy Crisis and War

Iran seeks an end to its war with the United States and Israel while facing internal energy shortages and severe financial distress.

Iran is seeking a permanent end to an eight-month war with the United States and Israel, demanding the lifting of a U.S. naval blockade, sanctions relief, and guarantees against future attacks. To pressure Washington, Tehran has leveraged its control over the Strait of Hormuz, where attacks on commercial shipping have pushed Brent crude prices above $117 a barrel.

Masoud Pezeshkian has conditioned the resumption of direct talks with the United States on the practical removal of sanctions, arguing that escalating economic pressure undermines diplomacy. While regional powers including Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Turkiye have held talks with Iranian officials, and China has dispatched an envoy to prevent escalation, trust remains low. U.S. President Donald Trump has remained ambiguous on whether to negotiate or escalate, with the U.S. midterm elections and Israeli elections viewed as critical timing factors.

Internally, Iran faces severe instability. First Vice President Mohammadreza Aref warned that the government may restrict natural gas supplies to major consumers to ensure stability for remote regions this winter. Financial distress is so acute that U.S. Central Command reports Tehran-backed militias are diverting soldiers' pay to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Simultaneously, Iranian lawmakers have called for the impeachment of the foreign and agriculture ministers due to soaring food prices.
