Trump Threatens Strike on Iranian Nuclear Site Amid Conflict

President Donald Trump warned that the United States may strike Pickaxe Mountain, a fortified underground nuclear facility in the Zagros Mountains, if intelligence detects renewed activity. Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump defended a six-month military campaign, known as Operation Epic Fury, asserting that the primary objective is to ensure Iran never acquires a nuclear weapon.

The conflict, which began in February 2026, has involved intermittent U.S. strikes against Iranian radar, air defense, and maritime facilities to secure the Strait of Hormuz. While the U.S. Central Command reports destroying nearly 60 military assets, Iran has retaliated with rockets and drones targeting U.S. bases in Jordan, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates. The hostilities have resulted in the deaths of 18 U.S. service members.

Trump and Vice President JD Vance have consistently downplayed the scope of the engagement, characterizing it as a military conflict or small potatoes rather than a full-scale war. This rhetoric follows political pressure due to rising energy prices and poor polling ahead of the November midterm elections. The administration has faced criticism for reclassifying casualties as Overseas Operations to avoid official war declarations and death benefits. Additionally, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick recently retracted a claim that no Americans had died in the conflict, which Trump attributed to a mental lapse regarding Venezuela.
