Xi Jinping Visits White House to Expand Youth Exchanges

President Xi Jinping conducted a state visit to the United States on September 24, 2026, arriving at the White House at the invitation of President Donald Trump. During the arrival ceremony, Xi emphasized the necessity of candid dialogue, sincere cooperation, and strategic stability to prevent conflict and confrontation between the two nations.

Xi identified several key areas for potential collaboration, including law enforcement, counternarcotics, the management of artificial intelligence, and the restoration of more direct flights. As a gesture of friendship, he announced that two giant pandas, Ping Ping and Fu Shuang, will be sent to Zoo Atlanta in the coming days.

To strengthen grassroots connections, Xi expanded a previous youth initiative. While the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China had previously launched a program to invite 50,000 American youth to China over five years—with 40,000 already participating—Xi increased this target to 100,000 young Americans for study and exchanges over the next five years. This move aligns with his view that the vitality of the China-U.S. relationship depends on subnational exchanges and people-to-people interaction.
