Asian Markets Fall Amid AI Caution and Geopolitical Unrest

Asian stock markets declined Tuesday as investors grew selective about AI infrastructure and reacted to geopolitical instability in France and energy policy shifts in the U.S.

Asian stock markets declined on Tuesday, failing to follow a rebound in U.S. semiconductor and artificial intelligence stocks. South Korea's KOSPI fell 3.61% and Japan's Nikkei 225 dropped 1.28% as investors awaited earnings reports from major AI leaders including Meta, Tesla, Lam Research, and Texas Instruments. Within the sector, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. saw shares lose 0.8%, while South Korean firm Elice Group debuted on the market with shares opening 16% below its IPO price.

Global markets faced additional pressure from geopolitical instability. In France, authorities implemented curfews in Paris, Lille, and Nice following a weekend of anti-government riots and looting, which increased sovereign risk pricing in equities. Meanwhile, oil prices rose, with Brent crude futures reaching $109.89 a barrel. This surge was driven by supply disruption risks, including reports that Iran is providing intelligence and targeting assistance to Yemen's Houthi militia for attacks on Saudi Arabia.

In the United States, President Donald Trump issued an executive order waiving certain sanctions and tariffs on Russian energy, though he later stated a final decision had not yet been announced. Despite the regional market volatility, Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh expressed optimism regarding the strength of the U.S. economy.
