Kremlin Calls for Overdue U.S. Arms Control Talks
The Kremlin stated that arms control negotiations with the United States are long overdue but remain blocked by disputes over the conflict in Ukraine.
The Federal Government of Russia announced on Monday that arms control negotiations with the United States are long overdue and should have resumed already. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov described the process as a complex issue that requires "lengthy, painstaking expert negotiations" to resolve.
While Russia has expressed a desire to restore degraded ties with the United States, the Kremlin noted that ongoing differences regarding the conflict in Ukraine continue to block a meaningful reset in bilateral relations.
Peskov also addressed a proposal from U.S. President Donald Trump to hold trilateral arms control talks that would include China. He noted that Beijing has repeatedly declined to participate, as the Government of China maintains its nuclear arsenal is significantly smaller than those of Russia and the United States, making its involvement unnecessary.
