U.S. Government Takes Equity Stakes in Canadian Mining Firms

The United States government acquired equity stakes in Lithium Americas and Trilogy Metals to secure critical mineral projects located within U.S. borders.

The Federal government of the United States, under President Donald Trump, has acquired equity stakes in two Vancouver-based mining companies to secure critical mineral projects. The U.S. government took a 10% stake in Trilogy Metals Inc. to support copper projects in Alaska and a 5% interest in Lithium Americas Corp. for the Thacker Pass lithium project in Nevada. These transactions included highly favorable terms, such as nearly free warrants and a board seat for the U.S. government.

This move is part of a broader White House strategy to increase state ownership of private industry for national security purposes, a policy that also includes equity positions in Intel Corp and MP Materials Corp. Canadian mining industry representatives have cautioned against adopting this model, arguing that government equity creates conflicts of interest regarding regulation and permitting.

Energy Minister Tim Hodgson stated that Canada is unlikely to object to these investments because the underlying assets are located in the United States rather than domestically. He characterized the moves as capitalism in action. This stance occurs as Prime Minister Mark Carney's government continues to negotiate with the Trump administration over auto, steel, and aluminum tariffs. While Canada has used the Canada Growth Fund Inc. for equity deals in Nouveau Monde Graphite Inc. and Foran Mining Corp, those transactions were conducted at closer to market rates.
