Trump Nominates Kevin Warsh as Federal Reserve Chair

President Donald Trump nominated Kevin Warsh to succeed Jerome Powell as Federal Reserve Chair, while Powell broke precedent by remaining on the board.

President Donald Trump nominated Kevin Warsh to succeed Jerome Powell as Chair of the Federal Reserve, with Powell's term ending May 15, 2026. Warsh, a former member of the Board of Governors, has already cleared the Senate Banking Committee and awaits a final confirmation vote. Market analysts view Warsh as a hawkish nominee due to his history of prioritizing inflation suppression over employment and his advocacy for a radical reduction of the central bank's balance sheet, which currently stands between $6.7 trillion and $6.8 trillion.

In a departure from 75 years of precedent, Jerome Powell announced he will remain on the Board of Governors after stepping down as chair. Powell stated his decision to stay until early 2028 is tied to a Department of Justice investigation into the renovation of the Federal Reserve's Washington, D.C. headquarters. Although the DOJ dropped the criminal probe in late April and referred the matter to the Federal Reserve inspector general, Powell maintains that he will not leave until the process concludes with transparency.

This decision has drawn criticism from Senate Banking Committee Chair Tim Scott, who argues that having conflicting philosophies on the board is detrimental to the institution. The transition occurs amid concerns that Warsh's potential for aggressive quantitative tightening could drain financial liquidity, increase Treasury yields, and destabilize the current bull market.
