Trump Sanctions ICC and Buys Russian Diesel Amid Midterms

President Donald Trump sanctioned the International Criminal Court and announced a massive Russian diesel deal while making provocative remarks about Iran and domestic enemies.

President Donald Trump has launched a series of aggressive international and domestic initiatives while campaigning for the November 3 midterms. He imposed sanctions on the International Criminal Court (ICC) and its business partners, giving companies six months to wind down ties. The move follows ICC arrest warrants for Israeli leaders Benjamin Netanyahu and Yoav Gallant; Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned the U.S. would end the ICC if it did not cease its threats.

Simultaneously, Trump announced a deal to purchase over 1.8 million tons of Russian diesel to lower domestic fuel prices. He attributed high costs to Ukrainian attacks on Russian energy facilities and criticized President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for failing to secure a peace deal. Zelenskyy responded by calling the deal a "happy birthday present for Putin."

Domestically, Trump declared anyone using the term "Artificial Intelligence" instead of "Super Intelligence" to be "the enemy." He also made controversial remarks suggesting Tehran could "take out" Los Angeles and San Diego, later claiming the comments were a comparison regarding gasoline prices. These remarks drew criticism from California Governor Gavin Newsom.

In Canada, the administration's tariff threats have triggered political instability. British Columbia Premier David Eby called a snap election for October 24, citing threats to Canadian jobs, while Prime Minister Mark Carney has pursued a strategy of rejecting "Trump America" in favor of European Union associations. Meanwhile, Trump criticized Norway for denying him a second Nobel Peace Prize, shortly after the committee named former ICC judge Navi Pillay as the laureate.
