Rahul Gandhi Dissents Over CBI Director Selection Process

Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi formally recorded his dissent regarding the selection process for the next Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation on May 12 and 13, 2026. Following a meeting at the residence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Gandhi submitted a two-page dissent note and a formal letter alleging the process was a "biased exercise" and a "mere formality" designed to install a pre-decided candidate.

Gandhi claimed the government deliberately withheld self-appraisal and 360-degree assessment reports for 69 candidates, providing the documents only during the meeting. He asserted that this denial of information treats the Leader of the Opposition as a rubber stamp and makes a mockery of the selection process. Additionally, Gandhi accused the government of "institutional capture," claiming the CBI is used to target journalists, critics, and political opponents.

The high-powered selection panel, which includes Prime Minister Modi and Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, is tasked with appointing a successor to current Director Praveen Sood, whose tenure ends on May 24.
