Trump Renames Lake Ontario 'Lake America' Amid Trade War

President Donald Trump signed an executive order renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America following the collapse of trade negotiations and the imposition of steep tariffs on Canada.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order on August 27, 2026, officially renaming Lake Ontario as Lake America for all United States federal purposes. The directive requires the Department of the Interior and the U.S. Board on Geographic Names to update official maps and databases within 30 days. Trump justified the move by citing American investment in the waterway and claiming Canada has been "ripping us off for a long time on trade."

The renaming is the latest escalation in a deteriorating trade relationship. Following the collapse of bilateral negotiations, the U.S. imposed 50 percent tariffs on approximately $20 billion of Canadian exports. Prime Minister Mark Carney responded by withdrawing Canadian negotiators from Washington and implementing retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods, scheduled to take effect September 8. Trump further threatened 50 percent tariffs on Canadian automobiles and parts starting in January.

Opposition to the order has been widespread. Mark Carney rejected the change, asserting the name Lake Ontario predates both nations and originates from the Wendat word Ontari'io. Indigenous leaders, including Grand Chief Pierre Picard and Seneca Nation President J. Conrad Seneca, condemned the move as an attempt to erase Indigenous history. Within the U.S., New York Governor Kathy Hochul and the Rochester City Council vowed to continue using the original name, while Representative Debbie Dingell introduced legislation to block the order. The dispute has also sparked a commercial response, with Canadian brands like Jackpine and Peace by Chocolate launching themed merchandise to reaffirm the lake's identity.
