Trump Advocates $1.776 Billion Fund After DOJ Abandons Plan
President Donald Trump continues to support a multi-billion dollar fund for January 6 defendants despite its abandonment by the Department of Justice and opposition from Congress.
President Donald Trump continues to advocate for a proposed anti-weaponization fund intended to provide taxpayer-funded compensation to individuals charged in the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack, including those accused of assaulting police officers. Trump claims that many defendants were unfairly targeted by politically motivated prosecutions under the Joe Biden administration and were destroyed by dirty cops. He specifically stated that some people committed suicide because of the legal pressure they faced.
Despite the president's support, the initiative faced significant legal and administrative hurdles. Judge Leonie Brinkema temporarily blocked the establishment of the fund on May 29. On June 2, Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche informed lawmakers that the administration would not move forward with the project, and the Department of Justice officially abandoned the plan for the $1.776 billion fund.
The proposal also faces stiff opposition in Congress. Representative Brian Fitzpatrick vowed to block any congressional funding for the initiative, asserting that the executive branch lacks independent funding and the necessary votes for such an appropriation do not exist. This administrative failure coincided with other legislative setbacks, including the Senate's defeat of the SAVE America Act, where four Republican senators joined Democrats to block the measure. These combined losses signal a growing tension between the president's policy goals and the institutional checks provided by the judiciary and both chambers of Congress.
