Trump GOP Convention Faces Low Candidate Attendance

President Donald Trump is scheduled to headline a two-day televised GOP midterm convention in Dallas, Texas, on September 9-10. The event aims to galvanize voters and donors ahead of the November elections, but a survey of over 70 Republican candidates and members reveals significant reluctance to attend, with at least 45 confirming they will skip the gathering.

Lawmakers cited the need to campaign in home districts and prior personal obligations as primary reasons for their absence. Some members in competitive races expressed concern that associating with the president during a trade war with Canada and ongoing conflict in Iran could alienate independent voters. Additionally, some critics questioned the timing of the event, noting it coincides with the start of the NFL season.

Financial barriers also contributed to the low turnout, as the National Republican Congressional Committee requested a $25,000 minimum attendee donation. While House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune plan to attend, others within the party have described the convention as a waste of time. National Press Secretary Natalie Baldassarre defended the event, stating that Republicans are rallying behind the America First agenda to expand majorities in November.
