Keir Starmer Rejects Tony Blair's Radical Center Policy Proposal

Prime Minister Keir Starmer and rivals Andy Burnham and Wes Streeting rejected a critical essay by Tony Blair calling for a radical centrist shift in Labour policy.

Former Prime Minister Tony Blair published a nearly 6,000-word essay via the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change accusing the current Labour government of lacking a coherent plan and prioritizing politics over policy. Blair advocated for a "Radical Center" approach, urging the government to abandon net-zero targets in favor of North Sea oil and gas, cut welfare spending—specifically the pension triple lock—and embrace deregulation to foster economic growth. He also criticized Prime Minister Keir Starmer for refusing to allow U.S. military bases to be used for refueling during Donald Trump's war on Iran.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer rejected the criticisms, stating he has been "vindicated" by improvements in NHS waiting lists and immigration. In a Substack response, Starmer defended Britain's position as a sovereign AI player and argued that investing in clean energy is essential to reduce reliance on fossil fuel imports. He noted that the conditions he inherited in 2024 were vastly different from those Blair faced in 1997.

Internal party tension intensified as potential leadership challengers Andy Burnham and Wes Streeting criticized Blair for ignoring systemic inequality and the cost-of-living crisis. Burnham accused Blair of "retro thinking" and promoting neoliberalism that harmed communities. These disputes coincide with Burnham's campaign to return to Parliament in the Makerfield by-election on June 18, a victory that could facilitate a formal leadership challenge against Starmer.
