Israel Holds High-Stakes Election to Decide Netanyahu's Future

Israelis voted on October 27 in a consequential election pitting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu against former military chief Gadi Eisenkot amid regional war and domestic turmoil.

Israel held a general election on October 27, 2026, to determine the composition of the 120-seat Knesset. This first national vote since the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attacks served as a referendum on the leadership of Benjamin Netanyahu, who sought a seventh term amid ongoing corruption trials and an International Criminal Court arrest warrant for war crimes.

Netanyahu campaigned on military achievements in Gaza, Lebanon, and Iran, bolstered by a "complete and total endorsement" from U.S. President Donald Trump. He warned that a change in leadership could lead to a "second Holocaust" and used AI-generated imagery of a nuclear blast in Tel Aviv to emphasize the Iranian threat. His primary challenger, former military chief Gadi Eisenkot of the Yashar party, focused on accountability for the October 7 security failures and called for a state commission of inquiry.

Polling throughout October indicated a dead heat, with neither the pro-Netanyahu right-wing bloc nor the opposition projected to secure the 61-seat majority required to govern. This deadlock positions Arab-led parties, such as Ra'am, as potential kingmakers. To prevent civil unrest and potential fraud allegations—a scenario security forces termed "Operation Capitol"—Israel deployed a record 22,000 police officers to polling stations.

While the candidates differed on domestic issues like ultra-Orthodox military exemptions and judicial reforms, both maintained hard-line security stances, opposing a Palestinian state and supporting settlement expansion in the West Bank. President Isaac Herzog is now responsible for nominating a candidate to form a governing coalition.
