UK Launches AI Growth Zone and Stargate UK Infrastructure

The British government established an AI Growth Zone in North East England to attract £30 billion in private investment and create over 5,000 high-skilled jobs. This initiative coincides with a £31 billion Tech Prosperity Deal signed between Prime Minister Keir Starmer and President Donald Trump to enhance cooperation in AI, quantum, and nuclear technologies.

Central to this effort is Nvidia Corporation, which is coordinating a £11 billion rollout of 120,000 Blackwell Ultra GPUs and establishing AI factories across Britain. A key project, Stargate UK—a joint venture between Nvidia Corporation, OpenAI, and British firm Nscale—will deploy sovereign AI infrastructure to support sensitive sectors like national security and scientific research. The first phase will deploy up to 8,000 GPUs at Cobalt Park by early 2026, with plans to expand to 31,000.

Additional infrastructure includes a £10 billion commitment from Blackstone for a site in Blyth and a project by Microsoft and Nscale to build the UK's largest supercomputer in Loughton. Microsoft and Google have provided investment commitments of $30 billion and $5 billion, respectively. To support the workforce, OpenAI will launch the OpenAI Academy to upskill 7.5 million workers by 2030, while the Growth Zone will partner with universities in Newcastle, Durham, Sunderland, and Northumbria to provide training in data science and AI engineering.
