Trump Reviews Falkland Islands Position to Pressure UK Spending

President Donald Trump announced a review of the U.S. position on the Falkland Islands to incentivize the United Kingdom to increase defense spending.

President Donald Trump announced on Monday that the United States is reviewing its position on the Falkland Islands. The move follows reports that the Pentagon is considering measures to pressure NATO allies to meet a 5-percent defense spending target, which may include threatening to oppose British sovereignty over the South Atlantic archipelago.

The review aims to incentivize increased spending from the government of British Prime Minister Andy Burnham. The islands have remained a point of contention between Britain and Argentina since the 1982 war over the territory. While the United States Department of State previously maintained that its position on the islands remained neutral, the current administration is now reassessing that stance.

Trump stated that he reviews every position and suggested that the United Kingdom's current problems will get solved.
