Trump and Netanyahu Clash Over Lebanon Military Strikes

President Donald Trump berated Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over Israeli military escalation in Lebanon that threatened U.S. peace negotiations with Iran.

President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu experienced a diplomatic rift this week following an expletive-laden phone call on June 2. Trump admitted on the 'Pod Force One' podcast that he called Netanyahu "fucking crazy," expressing perturbation that Israeli military operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon were jeopardizing U.S. peace negotiations and a ceasefire with Iran.

Netanyahu downplayed the confrontation as a "tactical disagreement" during a CNBC interview, asserting that both leaders share common goals regarding the containment of Iran. However, tensions escalated as Israel captured Beaufort Castle in southern Lebanon and threatened strikes on Beirut, leading Trump to shift his focus toward regional stability and normalization deals over military deterrence. This friction coincided with a fragile June 4 agreement to renew a ceasefire and establish security zones in southern Lebanon.

Meanwhile, regional volatility persists. U.S. Central Command conducted self-defense strikes on Qeshm Island after Iranian drones targeted civilian mariners and the Persian Gulf. Iran further escalated by launching missile and drone attacks on Kuwait and Bahrain. While Netanyahu warned that Iran is "playing with fire" and stated that both Israeli and American forces are ready for military action, he acknowledged that the decision to resume full-scale strikes rests with Trump.

Domestically, the public rift has drawn criticism in Israel. Opposition leader Yair Lapid accused Netanyahu of turning the country into an American protectorate, while Trump reportedly explored alternative political channels in Israel to advance his regional agenda.
