Donald Trump Criticizes NATO Spending Ahead of Ankara Summit

President Donald Trump called U.S. support for NATO ridiculous and non-reciprocal, citing a $999 billion spending disparity before the July 7-8 summit in Turkey.

President Donald Trump criticized NATO allies on Truth Social on Thursday, describing the United States' financial commitment to the alliance as ridiculous and one-sided. Trump claimed that between 2014 and 2025, the U.S. spent $999 billion to protect other members without receiving any benefit, contrasting this with spending from the United Kingdom ($90.5 billion), France ($66.5 billion), Italy ($48.8 billion), and Poland ($44.3 billion). He asserted that other nations, including Germany, spent significantly less.

These remarks precede a NATO summit scheduled for July 7-8 in Ankara, Turkey. The tension follows a January National Defense Strategy from the Pentagon that prioritizes allies taking primary responsibility for their own defense in Europe, the Middle East, and the Korean Peninsula. Trump further alleged that the relationship is not reciprocal, stating, "They were not there for us!!!"

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte countered these claims by presenting data on the Trump Trillion, representing a $1.2 trillion increase in defense spending by Europeans and Canadians since 2017. Rutte argued that this increase supports approximately 195,000 U.S. jobs and created a $300 billion order backlog for American defense contractors. While all 32 allies have now met the 2 percent of GDP spending benchmark, NATO leaders previously agreed to increase that target to 5 percent by 2035 under U.S. pressure.
