Iran Demands Sanctions Relief to Reopen Strait of Hormuz
Iran expects a U.S. response by Tuesday on a proposal to end its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for sanctions relief.
The Government of Iran expects a formal response from the United States by Tuesday regarding a proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that Tehran will end its blockade of the vital shipping route only if several conditions are met, including a regional ceasefire that encompasses Lebanon, the lifting of oil sector sanctions, the unfreezing of Iranian assets abroad, and an end to the U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports.
These negotiations are being facilitated by Qatari intermediaries who have presented proposals to both nations. The current standoff follows a cycle of conflict that began with U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran in February, which triggered reciprocal blockades.
Recent discussions took place in New York during the UN General Assembly, where Araghchi met with U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to discuss the preconditions for reopening the strait.
