Ukraine and Russia Exchange Massive Long-Range Missile and Drone Strikes

Russia and Ukraine exchanged intense long-range strikes between August 8 and 9, 2026, resulting in significant civilian casualties and infrastructure damage on both sides. Volodymyr Zelenskyy defended the Ukrainian operations as just responses to Russian aggression while calling for increased sanctions and air defenses.

Russian forces launched massive strikes on Odesa, targeting the seaport and power facilities, which wounded eight people and caused widespread electricity outages for 90,000 consumers. Zelenskyy characterized these attacks as a war on global food security due to the port's role in agricultural exports. In Kharkiv, Russian missiles struck a residential high-rise, killing two people and injuring 21. Other Russian targets included oil refineries in Sumy and energy infrastructure in Pavlohrad, while a World Health Organization warehouse in Dnipro was destroyed.

Simultaneously, Ukrainian drone swarms targeted the Belgorod region of Russia, where strikes on apartment blocks killed at least five people and injured 25. Other Ukrainian attacks hit the Black Sea ports of Novorossiysk and Gelendzhik, and the industrial city of Ufa. Russian defense officials claimed to have intercepted over 150 drones across the European part of Russia and Crimea. The conflict expanded beyond the two nations' borders as drones exploded in Moldova and Bulgaria.

Amidst the escalation, Ukraine finalized a $283 million deal with Turkey for 70 ATACMS missiles and 12 M270 rocket systems, pending United States approval. Russia also claimed to have seized two villages in eastern Donetsk during the period.
