South Koreans Support Nuclear Arms After Trump Cuts Exercises

A Gallup Korea poll conducted from August 25 to 27 shows that 65% of South Koreans support the acquisition of independent nuclear weapons, while 30% oppose the move. This shift in public sentiment follows a decision by Donald Trump to abruptly curtail joint US-South Korean military exercises. Trump cited his positive relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un as the reason for the reduction.

South Korean officials stated they were not informed of the decision in advance, leading to concerns over the reliability of US security guarantees. In response, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung directed officials to accelerate the development of the nation's first nuclear-powered submarine to strengthen self-defense capabilities.

The development occurs as North Korea continues to advance its nuclear program. Trump recently stated that Kim possesses "57 very powerful nuclear weapons" and expressed his intention to meet with the North Korean leader later this year, while Kim Jong Un continues to seek recognition as a legitimate nuclear state.
